Tools for Efficiency Workshop: Value Stream Mapping

Value Stream Mapping (VSM) is a Diagnostic tool that enables a company to identify waste in manufacturing and administrative processes using data gathered through observation and experience. VSM events often results in reduced costs, improved communication, increased quality, reduced lead-time and discovery and better understanding of the Value Stream.
This workshop shows how to gather the information required to eliminate, reduce or integrate non-value added activities in Value Streams and how to use the information to implement Lean projects to create a Future State condition. Participants will learn the steps necessary for creating a current-state value stream map from customer order back to raw material, and develop a future state vision to act as a blueprint for Lean activities.
Participants will create their own current and future state maps based upon data gathered at ACME Stamping, our case study company. Using Value Stream Mapping as a tool, a cross-functional team of employees will map the current state from customer back to raw material including all steps, both value-added and non-value-added, and both manufacturing and administrative or information flow, to develop a future state vision to act as a blueprint for Lean activities. The Future State often represents a breakthrough change compared to the way the company currently operates. The VSM team will develop an implementation strategy to make the Future State a reality. The most urgent needs will be addressed first, and can typically be accomplished in a very short time frame with the appropriate resources applied.
