Seeing and Eliminating Waste in Administrative Settings – Value Stream Mapping
One of the tools to expose wastes in processes used by world-class organizations is Value Stream Mapping (VSM). Too often, when people look at optimizing processes, they ask each person to optimize their area without seeing the process from a customer’s viewpoint. VSM brings team members from across the organization together to attack waste by following information and materials through the whole process as it currently operates (Current State), then using data gathered, identifies new ways of seeing the waste across the entire process (Future State). Then, optimization projects in the places where the most impact can be made for internal and external customers to improve flow, increase productivity, and decrease costs are undertaken, creating a new current state.
Trigard, a local manufacturing company, used the Value Stream Mapping process to significantly reduce internal and external customer wait times for specialized signage and memorials while increasing quality and reducing production times. Using their current and future state maps, Ethan and Ross Darby will share a case study on the VSM in an administrative environment and how you can quickly improve waste identification and improve it with low-cost tools.
