Today’s manufacturers are facing increasing pressure – from both regulatory agencies and their principal customers – to reduce the impact of their processes on the environment.
The Illinois Manufacturing Extension Center (IMEC) helps Illinois’ small and mid-sized manufacturers implement an environmental management system that conforms to the ISO 14001 standard. We can access expertise to provide environmental management services including:
• General awareness workshops – executive overview of ISO 14001 requirements
• Gap analysis assessment – typically a two-day evaluation, by initial walk-through and self-assessment, of a manufacturer’s business processes and environmental management systems. Includes listing of ISO 14001 elements that must be addressed before registration.
• ISO 14001 implementation – One-on-one consultation to guide a company through all phases of the ISO 14001 registration process including procedure documentation and assistance implementing each element of the standard. Participants will learn how to establish an action plan, complete an initial environmental review, learn the key requirements of the ISO standard, understand how to identify and rank environmental aspects and impacts, identify legal and other requirements, and pinpoint where to establish operational control and how to create work instructions.
• Mentor Alliance – Designed for facilities with ISO 9000 experience or with strong environmental programs. This 5-workshop series is tailored for environmental and quality systems specialists. It provides the essential information manufacturers need to develop and implement an ISO 14001 Environmental Management System. The keystone of the program is mentoring by manufacturers who have already achieved 14001 registration.
• Internal auditor training – We help companies develop the internal capabilities to audit to the ISO 14001 Standard and ensure that the EMS is operating effectively and conforming to the requirements of the standard.
